It would make sense for Elemental's sparse IPMs to perform an initial check on the percentage of nonzeros of the input matrices (and, later, the predicted cost of sparse-direct factorization implied by the symbolic analysis) and switch to the dense implementations (which could be much faster) if appropriate.
