At the time of this writing, OpenShift 4.3 is the latest release of Red Hat's OpenShift Kubernetes distribution. This is a Red Hat licensed product, it is not available as free download. (There is an OKD 4.3 preview but I won't cover that.)
Here are two options to get access to OpenShift:
This option allows to run OpenShift 4.3 on your own laptop without purchasing an OpenShift license. It is called CodeReady Containers (crc
) and is the 'official' successor to MiniShift.
CRC is available for Mac, Linux, and Windows 10, and it uses native virtualization to run OpenShift, namely Hyperkit for Mac, Hyper-V for Windows, and KVM for Linux.
These instructions have been tested with CRC version 1.4.0 (which includes OpenShift version 4.2.13).
Red Hat supports CRC on Windows 10 Pro and Home (with Fall Creator's Update), and on the Linux side it is only supported officially on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, and current versions of Fedora. Users of Ubuntu and other Linux distributions currently may have to perform additional configuration on their machines. This is due to different approaches in network name resulution (dnsmasq vs systemd-resolved). You can find information on CRC Github Issues. Hopefully this will be fixed in the future.

You need a Red Hat account to access this page, and you can register for an account directly on this page if you do not already have one. Its free and you won't be able to install CRC without this account.
When you sign on to this page, you get access to the official documentation, the download links for the crc
binaries, and to the 'Pull Secret' and this is the reason to go through this page because the Pull Secret is personalized to your Red Hat account.
Once you obtained the binary for your operating system and your pull secret, you can follow the CRC Getting Started Guide or a blog I wrote about running Red Hat OpenShift 4 on your laptop.
The default setup of CRC requires at least:
- 4 virtual CPUs
- 8 GB RAM
- 35 GB disk space for the virtual disk
It creates a virtual machine (VM) with those specifications to run OpenShift 4 on your workstation.
- On current Intel (i5, i7) and AMD CPUs, 2 virtual CPUs = 1 physical core.
- 8 GB of RAM will allow to start OpenShift but are not sufficient especially when you install Istio.
- 16 GB of RAM will work.
Be aware that you still need resources not reserved by CRC to run the OS of your workstation! That means you won't be able to use CRC on a smaller (older) machine! Also note that you cannot change the configuration (CPUs, RAM) once you started CRC for the first time. You will need to delete and restart it to create the VM running the OpenShift cluster with new specifications.
The binaries are updated about once per month and previous to CRC version 1.2 you had to delete and reinstall your cluster every month due to expired certificates. Starting with version 1.2 CRC can renew the certificates and keep running. You may still want to update it from time to time since newer versions typically contain newer versions of OpenShift including bug fixes. Update means you delete your cluster and start fresh with a newer version of CRC!
crc setup
will check and setup the prereqs for CRC.
crc start
starts the OpenShift cluster and in the end prints out the credentials of two users:
- kubeadmin with full administrative rights
- developer
crc console
opens the OpenShift Web Console on your default browser.
crc console --credentials
displays the credentials of the kubeadmin and developer users.
crc stop
shuts down OpenShift and the VM it is running in.
Red Hat OpenShift 4.3 is currently (March 2020) available in a public beta. You require a PAYG or other paid IBM Cloud Account to create a cluster, though. There is no free or test OpenShift cluster available on IBM Cloud. During workshops we will give you access to clusters paid by IBM.
To create an OpenShift cluster on the IBM Cloud, log on to the IBM Cloud and go to the Catalog:
- Click on "Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud" (located in the Containers section)
- Select "Single zone" under Location, select a Geography, and a Worker zone (data center)
- Select OpenShift Version 4.3.1 or whatever 4.3 version currently is available
- Select a flavor for your worker node(s), b3c.4x16 virtual shared is fine
- Reduce the number of Worker nodes to 1 (sufficient for this exercise)
- Note the Order summary and total estimated monthly costs in the upper right corner!
- Click Create only if you are willing to order a paid cluster!
