Validation State Machines #7

There are several state machine-esque problems that need to be solved:

Fields can be optional
Fields can be required (user must interact with the component before it can be submitted)
Fields can be validated (which feels like a superset of the above)

These feel like state machines. Need to think about how these can be represented and potentially abstracted.
