People are genuinely bad at "just hit save all the time" type systems, myself included. While bugs/crashes are uncommon software that can crash occasionally can be a headache, for numerus other IRL issues, powerouts, etc loosing progress can be a killer.
I know within myself that the use of the "build" feature has a UI feeling of the weight of a "save", which everyone has to learn that is not actually the case.
Suggestion: Separate from the "on save" .bak file, make the "on build" create a project.build.bak
