maybe I misunderstand...

But does this provide the middleground between home-manager and nixos? I've been looking for a way to control my whole ubuntu system via nix, but seems like it is NixOS or bust (unless you use nix-darwin).

But your sudo install method makes me think this could work as a middleground, or am I wrong?
