With a hostname that is not an FQDN, riak start will timeout out and leave a bunch of processes that are not cleaned up in a bad state. Also, it will not generate any logs to indicate what the problem is.
The issue can be determined with riak ping. The output from riak start says to run riak console and observe the output but riak console does not produce the same issue.
