dpkg says it can support a custom database being used, but setting DPKG_ADMINDIR or with a command line argument.

However I wasnt able to get this working with stdeb.
Either something in the python code itself is blocking this, or some parts of the dpkg suite dont respect it, or something else.
This would be very helpful for building a more complete test suite, as many different fake databases could be created using equivs, which I have also packaged for openSUSE at https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:jayvdb:branches:system:packagemanager/equivs , to test various scenarios.
