YAML 1.2 is mostly compatible with 1.1, but does introduce some breaking changes in order to make YAML a proper superset of JSON. It's been released since 2009 and support for 1.2 may be more common than 1.1 (for example, https://github.com/jbeder/yaml-cpp implements 1.2 only).
