Links between Packages and Package Groups Overview #472
Comments
I am not opposed to linking it, I just have no idea where on the website. |
I see two sensible options. The first is that a submenu is added to upper left side of Packages and Package Groups subpages, similar to AUR and Security subpages. The new submenu could also contain link to Wiki article about repositories, Pacman and possibly to AUR (but this doubles the main menu functionality). The other option is to add a reference to the text box below the package list in Packages subpage, so the groups are at least mentioned somewhere outside Wiki. While it's a start, the groups remain rather hidden this way and it doesn't feel like a complete solution. |
Thinking about this more, we do show group pages if a package has groups ie. ardour. So there is some sensible link, but of course groups are not discoverable. Alas neither in pacman really except if you know I'm not super convinced making the groups overview more visible is a huge benefit. |
Yes, but they are only shown in detailed package overview, in the middle of a long list of details and nowhere else. Considering the Packages subsite one might even conclude the group functionality has been removed in the past and there are just some code remmants.
Either we have the functionality or we don't. I believe that half-implementation can never be the final solution. Of course it's a debate whether groups really justify an additional submenu, but I think at least mentioning and linking them in the bottom box is a no-brainer. |
Currently the only link to Package Groups Overview subpage is from a related Wiki page and nowhere else on the site. Since both Package Groups Overview and the basic Packages subpage offer repository-(browsing-)related functionality it would be useful if they also included links to quickly access each one from the other.
