The batch installer didn't classically need sudo because it didn't have to place any of the AQLIB or SMLIB libraries anywhere special. But if we used /.moog as the data directory instead of ~/.moog, then sudo is required. As a result I couldn't do a one-line installer without sudo,, which was problematic for my desktop (and for many others, I'm sure).
At the moment I have reverted the batch installer to use ~/.moog, while the main installer (which needs sudo anyways) uses /.moog /cc @bathompso
