Imagine I'm positioning the furniture in a room and I want to do it from the user perspective. Positioning an element, exiting the editor to check the results and enter back makes for a cumbersome workflow

Not sure if this plays into your issue. But I would suggest that the inspector centers on the position that the active camera had before the inspector was activated. That way it's possible to go trough the scene, find an object that needs to be changed and then switch to the inspector and change it. Closing the inspector would drop you back into the scene were you left it. This would drastically enhance the workflow for larger and more complex scenes.
The main issue now is that the inspector always opens at the origin point of the whole scene and the only way to move in the scene is by dragging the mouse on right click. This can take forever to get to a certain point.
