Wildcards not always resolving

I'm trying to use wildcards to generate my prompts in Forge WebUI - and have several set up such as medium or character and so on. I'm finding that they do work.. but are highly unreliable. I'm finding that about 75% of the time.. the wildcards are not being resolved.. and are instead being taken literally as the prompt text.

I do know that the wildcards DO actually work as if I keep hitting the generate button making no other changes, 1 in 4 attempts (more or less) will actually work. Just most of the time.. it doesn't.

Any advice/ideas on what I might be doing wrong? Or is there an issue with wildcards?
