If you look closely, the characters above the white character do not change until they are removed. In some scenes in the movie, this is how it looks; however, in other scenes, notably the first time the effect is shown, the old characters change.
I would like this feature added with a customizable interval.

Hey I noticed this, too. I might work on it. It's on the back burner of the stovetop that is in another city, disconnected, in a storage unit that I lost the key to, though, so it would probably be faster if you implemented it yourself, even if that meant learning C from scratch. I'm here with you as far as the idea, though... 👍 My engagement with it is awaiting merges of PR's #184 and #175. I would probably iterate over every non-blank i,j every draw loop, rand() against a constant as you described, and if it triggers, rand() again for which character to swap in.
