All news, events and other activities we are producing are seen by active contributors and those who are already looking for ways to get involved but despite market share even WordPress users (like site owners) have no idea about the large ecosystem which exists beyond their dashboard and most people are blind to information in widgets in admin, even news, especially if they don’t have news on their own language, or they are rare. And even if there are events which are happening close by, a person needs to be really motivated to look at what it is all about.
We can ask around how contributors found out the Community and about their journey, to have a broader picture. My example: I was upset when I was presented by my boss with a fact that we are about to switch to another CMS and started to look at events I can attend to cheer myself up and stumble on the local Meetup event. I didn’t notice it on the dashboard and found out that they are happening only browsing through IT events around. Only then I started to pay attention to the dashboard events widget, but I still had no idea about the Make WordPress and started to contribute several WordCamps later when I finally landed on the Marketing team table on WCEU 2019 in Berlin. After this it took several more months to become useful, but this is another topic.
Therefore, I propose to brainstorm ideas on how to get to different audiences to raise awareness among a wide audience. This can be something common like reaching to bloggers working in IT, creating content in related areas like SEO, blogging etc., or more creative approaches like comics, cartoon or computer game creation, or we can ask contributors to share their other talents and passions. I believe we have many musicians, people who are working out are also a good example for everyone, embroidery and knitting, efforts in reducing waste and much-much more. This way we can find out more about ourselves )
Questions are:
What are target audiences?
How to reach them?
Schoolchildren and students are audiences worth targeting, they are the future 🙂
