I think we should not focus on abundance calculations specifically. As for handling zeroes, there are likely to be a number of tickets filed. There is work to do in the data service to update floaters APIs, some in plot.data to learn new math tricks, a possible new metadata endpoint to find the per row vocabulary of something like species after accounting for filters...

I'll leave this open for now until I file the other tickets, but this will il be closed or reimagined shortly.

this is now specific to an abundance floating chart, which if we choose to include as a min req for the initial release of the map, will require mockups and discussion w dataviz and likely frontend work as well. i think the question currently is around priority.
