  1. It does strange things to markdown source:

  2. It breaks latexdiff (https://github.com/TrustedComputingGroup/pandoc/actions/runs/10729253654)

A better solution would probably to use verbatim as intended (for latex-based syntax highlighting) instead of the pandoc filter-based highlighting that we were using before.
