Some of the things Richard and Max have to do before the release:
* Backport all changes made between 2.03 and 2.09b:
- TeX.mdimporter: TODO
* Write a list of things that Max changed (at least the user visible stuff)
* Remove the fake "Eugene Algorithms", use "The TeXShop team" or so instead (?)
* Modify the web site:
- add a link the SF.net project page
- add links to the bug/feature request trackers
-
* File release system: Add 2.04 and 2.09 to the SF.net file release system (Max)
* Hunt down memory leaks
* ...
* Do lots of testing, esp. for some of the more obscure features, to
When doing the release, we should
* Give all files standarized names containing the version, e.g.
TeXShop-2.10.dmg and TeXShop-2.10-source.zip
or so.
* Release them via the SF.net FRS (File Release System); if desired, they can of course
in addition also be released in the traditional place (probably required for the
auto-update feature anyway).
* ...
AFTER the 2.10 release, we can move on to other things. Top on the list:
* New localization system (Max)
* Bette auto-update system; consider Sparkle <http://andymatuschak.org/pages/sparkle>
* Use "Smart Crash Reports" <http://www.unsanity.com/smartcrashreports/>
* ...
The following is a preliminary, incomplete list of changes since 2.09b:
-- BEGIN DRAFT ---
- Major (and I mean it!) overhaul of the TeXShop source code, which resolved
many leaks, removed duplicate code, cleaned up cruft, simplified many things,
and, and and... Most importantly, this will make it a lot easier to implement
future modifications to TeXShop. However, due to the huge amount of change
involved, this is likely to have introduced a couple regressions. too. Please
bear with us while we work on fixing these, and report any problems you
encounter via the new TeXShop bug tracker:
<https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=155796&atid=797238>
- Moved TeXShop source code into a Subversion repository hosted at SourceForge.net,
see also <https://sourceforge.net/projects/texshop/>
- Added Cmd-, as hotkey for prefs dialog in all localizations
- Changed 'Goto Error' hotkey from Cmd-E to Cmd-Ctrl-E (to enable 'Use selection for find')
- Rewrote the syntax coloring code, which is now a lot faster (in particular for big files)
- Rewrote file encoding support, which makes it much easier to add new encodings in the future
- Replaced certain internal wrapper programs (unamewrap, TEXTEDIT.app) by code which performs the respective actions directly
To stress it again, we made literally hundreds of internal changes, many of which
you won't notice for now, but which will enable us to make further changes in the
hopefully not so distant future. For some rough and incomplete notes on what we
are considering to do, see <http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.cgi/texshop/trunk/TODO?view=markup>.
Finally, if you encounter bugs, have feature requests, or want to help with the
development of TeXShop, then <https://sourceforge.net/projects/texshop/> is the
place to go.

- [+] NSCursor
- [+] Do not use undocumented NSCursor _crosshairCursor
API
- [+] Removed openHandCursor() and grabHandCursor() and

MyPDFKitView, to simplify rest of code
- [+] Unify pdfWindowDidBecomeKey and pdfWindowDidResignKey
in TSWindowManager
- [ ] TSDocument
- [ ] Move ToolbarCode into separate class
- [ ] Important: We are using multiple windows for our
document, and we do it the wrong way
- [ ] Shoud overload makeWindowControllers !
- [ ] See "Sketch" demo by Apple, as well as the
NSDocument docs
- [ ] Use multiple NSWindowControllers, one for the
text editor window, one for the preview
- [ ] overload [NSWindowController

the window title of the preview (add page number
to the end)
- [ ] mark text editor window as being "primary":
[NSWindowController setShouldCloseDocument:YES]

files and other files
- [ ] Blocks that could be split out:
- [ ] Syntax highlighting code
- [ ] PDF Sync code

- [ ] doJob: and doJobForScript:
- [ ] checkRootFile_forTask, checkMasterFile,
checkFileLinks
- [ ] Toolbar
- [ ] Move toolbar code into separate class
- [ ] Fix the toolbar item validation code
- [ ] Maybe move the whole toolbar config stuff into a
.toolbar file, like the OmniGroup folks do
- [ ] In fact, check how OminAppKit handles toolbars
- [ ] "Auto completion" item: The menu representation
doesn't put a check mark into the menu when auto
completion is active
- [ ] Get rid of the extra "prev page" and "next page"
buttons - it's just confusing
- [-] TSEncodingSupport
- [+] Right now, one needs to modify three .nib files (and
all localized variants, i.e. about 30 files) as well
as EncodingSupport.m to change the list of supported
encodings
- [+] Suggestion: Generate the menus in the .nibs "on
the fly": add a method to EncodinSupport which
populates a NSMenu with the correct menu items,
and then let the prefs dialog etc. call that
method
- [+] Use custom Encoding.strings file to localize encoding
names
- [-] Add localized names for the encodings in all languages
- [ ] /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/
Frameworks/CarbonCore.framework/Resources/*.lproj/
TextEncodingNames.string
- [+] Add comments to encoding.strings which give the
hex key used in TextEncodingNames.string, to help
translators
- [+] Abolish the intermediate encoding "tags", directly
use NSStringEncoding
- [ ] Currently "EncodingChangedNotification" is sent *to*
TSEncodingSupport, and this then modifies the
encoding settings. Proposal: The prefs manager
directly invokes a method of TSEncodingSupport when
the encoding changes; this then sends out the
notification, and lets client code do its updates, as
needed. This would get rid of various ugly tricks and
hacks.
- [+] Use preprocessor on Info.plist / CustomInfo.plist for the
version strings -> reduce number of places where we have
to update the version
- [+] TEXTEDIT.app provides TEXEDIT support (see
<http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/tex.1.html>); the
same could be achieved with an extremely simple shell
script using "osascript".
- [ ] Revise matrixpanel_1.plist
- [ ] Use a dict instead of an array -> more flexible,
easier to maintain, forward compatible
- [ ] Remove the Bold/Italics/Alignment/Ruler options. We can
use the keyboard shortcuts for better things, too
- [ ] Add a "Custom Tab width" option, e.g. to the "Fonts"
dialog
- [-] Bugs
- [ ] Loading e.g. a TIFF (sometimes?) results in it being
drawn on a black background.
- [ ] Can be reproduced using e.g. LaTeXAction.tiff
- [ ] Fix toolbar validation code
- [ ] it used to call [super validateMenuItem] instead of
[self validateMenuItem]
- [ ] Disable "Previous page" when on first page (same for
"Next Page" on last page)
- [ ] Statistics dialog is broken
- [ ] Tries to use "detex" w/o checking for its presence,
and fails silently
- [ ] Phantom line bug
- [ ] http://www.apfelwiki.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=239&sid=
757aba62dac6b809f2f8373ac4b92480
- [ ] Apparently is a Cocoa bug
- [ ] To reproduce, try http://arXiv.org/abs/hep-th/9912205
- [ ] Editor slow down

- [ ] PDF Kit bug
The second bug affects loading a new pdf document
after typesetting.
Apple's PDFKit documentation states
"setDocument:(PDFDocument *)document
"Associates a document with a PDF View object. If
a document is already associated
with the view, it is released first and then
document is associated with the view."
However, when I first released version 2.0, users
complained that after typesetting
a large project a couple of times, the system slowed
way down and it would be
several seconds after typesetting before they could
edit again. My experiments showed
that the problem happened when disposing the old
document structures (there are
many because PDFKit associates page classes to each
page of a document). So I
changed the code so old pdf document classes appears
to still be used, and thus are
not released when a new document is created by
typesetting. I still call setDocument
above, but the old classes are then not disposed.
This means, of course,
that virtual memory is gradually expanded as the user
typesets again and again.
I have no idea why disposing the old data structures
creates this awful slowdown.
I suspect I'll need Apple's help, and have started
constructing a simple example
which illustrates the problem, but haven't written
Apple about it yet.
- [ ] related to use of setDocument:(PDFDocument *)document
- [ ] If you use multi-page mode, and typeset a document, it
will always jump to the start of the page instead of
staying in the old position
- [ ] http://www.apfelwiki.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=285&sid=
757aba62dac6b809f2f8373ac4b92480
- [ ] Switching between single and multipage sometimes changes
the magnification ?!?
- [ ] "Display Format" menu sometimes has too many check marks
- [ ] "Go to error" should only be active when it makes sense
(i.e. when there are errors)
- [ ] German localization: "In Auswahl Ersetzen" -> "In Auswahl
ersetzen"
- [ ] German localization of the Help text is quite horrible in
some parts.
- [ ] Search & Replace with OgreKit can mess up the
(incremental) syntax highlighting (to trigger this,
replace "$a$" by "abc")
- [ ] Syntax highlighting
- [ ] Bug when replacing the \ in "\example" by a letter
- [ ] Undo doesn't work properly: replace the x in
"\example" by a space. Then undo. The coloring is now
bad
- [ ] "Find all" is buggy: Run "Find All", then close the find
dialog (not the result window); switch to another app and
come back: The two windows are back, and the find dialog
can't be closed anymore (see
<http://www.apfelwiki.de/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1133#1133>)
.
- [ ] Auto completion seems to slow TeXShop down a lot
- [+] Memory leaks
- [+] openForPreview is leaking myArray
- [+] MyPDFKitView missing [super dealloc]
- [ ] When opening FOO.bib file, we also open FOO.pdf as a
preview for it.
- [-] Features
- [-] PDF preview
- [ ] Window zoom isn't working very nicely, could be
improved
- [ ] When using the rectangle selection tool, the
dimension of the rect is shown, but no unit
- [ ] I guess the unit is "pixels"; at the very least
that should be displayed
- [ ] Maybe it would be possible/desirable to use cm or
inch instead/alternatively
- [ ] pdfsync in the "search"-mode could be improved; it
doesn't quite behave as expected: Instead of
selecting the text *after* the click position, it
should select the text (or maybe, 'words') around the
click position
- [+] The arrow buttons in the toolbar are strange; maybe
for pageup/down, copy the icons from Preview.app
- [+] The "<" and ">" buttons in the toolbar look ugly ->
instead use the triangle buttons from Preview.app.
See also Cocoa Browser
- [ ] Add Zoom in/out hotkeys (Cmd-Plus and Minus)
- [ ] Add page count to window title, like in Preview.app
- [ ] In the toolbar, change the NSMatrix for the
selection/zoom/etc. tools to a NSSegmentedControl
- [ ] When using the magnifier tool, draw a border around
the magnified area
- [ ] Editor
- [ ] Add a (optional) status line at the bottom of the
window, showing the cursor position
- [ ] Optionally show line numbers
- [ ] Navigation
- [ ] "Jump to next section"
- [ ] "Section folding" wäre cool, aber schwer
- [ ] Improved tags system
- [ ] Put the "tags" / TOC into a NSOutlineView in
a drawer?
- [ ] Make the tags menu hierarchical (possible as
an option only)
- [ ] The menu looks odd when the .tex files
contains lines like this:
- [ ] \section{This is a section}
\label{this-is-a-label}
- [ ] Check if a file was modified on the HD by another
program
- [ ] Possible reaction: If the file was in
non-dirty/saved state, silently reload it;
otherwise, show a dialog to the user and ask
whether to reload or whether to ignore the changes
- [ ] This is important to avoid data loss if the user
has the file open in two editors at the same time
- [ ] Spell checking
- [ ] Remember the language of a given file during run
time, so that if one has two files in two
different languages open, one doesn't have to
switch the spell check back and forth
- [ ] Maybe make it possible to mark a document as
being in a certain language (using special
comments at the start of the document).
- [ ] When a ".bib" file is open, no reason to offer e.g.
"LaTeX" as a typesetting operation, is there?
- [ ] Global
- [ ] Maybe prevent PDFs from appearing in "Open Recent"
list ? (-> NSDocumentController noteNewRecentDocument)
- [ ] Better would be if we could split the open recent
list into three or more parts, "TeX Files",
"PDFs", "Other", similar to the global recent
objects menu (under the apple menu). This might
be a lot of work, though.
- [ ] Handling of new untitled windows
- [ ] Upon launch, (optionally) a new untitled window
is opened. When you then open an existing
document, the empty untitled document stays. But
if no change was made to it at all, then it
should simply be removed, like e.g. TextEdit does
(this is part of the HIG)
- [ ] TextEdit source is open and shows how to
implement this
- [ ] Shortcuts/hotkeys: Some differ from virtually every
other app out there. Consider changing them
- [ ] "Go to error" now is Cmd-E. In other programs it
is "Enter Selection"; the latter is currently w/o
a hotkey, which is very annoying (it's a rather
central feature and I use it *way* more often
than "Go to error". Suggestion: Change "Go to
error" to Alt-Cmd-E or Ctrl-Cmd-E, and use Cmd-E
the way many other apps use it
- [ ] Cmd-D was the standard for "Find previous" under
10.0. These days (and since at least 10.2), the
standard combo is Cmd-Shift-G, used in virtually
every app out there.
- [ ] At least on a german OS X, Cmd-< and Cmd-> are
normally used to cycle through the open windows.
Not sure if this is the same as in the english
system, though.
- [ ] Suggestion: Use the same hotkeys as in
Mail.app for (un)indent: Alt-Shift-Cmd-Ä and Ö
- [ ] Cmd-+ and Cmd-- for zoom in/out is intuitive and
matches Preview.app. Letting them rotate
something isn't...
- [ ] For rotating, either use the same combos as
Preview.app (Cmd-L and Cmd-R) or similar derived
combos (e.g. Cmd-Ctrl-L or Cmd-Alt-L, i.e. add in
shift/alt/ctrl as desired).
- [ ] Move "Spelling" commands to a submenu, like in
TextEdit and other apps
- [-] Localization
- [ ] German auto-update dialog is using the informal "Du"
-> not professional, fix
- [ ] Fix spelling mistakes in german translation
- [+] .nib files should be properly set up as
"localizations" in the XCode project
- [ ] Improved semi-automatic localization
- [ ] there are already several documents describing
the localization process, e.g. "Localizing Nib
Files.txt"
- [ ] But there are many of them, which is confusing.
Unify them into one document
- [ ] Also, reduce the number of "critical"
translations (by not hardcoding strings into the
source etc.)
- [ ] Use Localization tools
- [ ] nibTranslate 0.7.1
- [ ] AppleGlot
- [ ] http://www.blue-tec.com/locsuite/
- [ ] ...
- [ ] Remove (or at least reduce) hardcoded strings
- [ ] [TSAppDelegate displayLatexPanel]
- [ ] [TSAppDelegate displayMatrixPanel]
- [ ] configureExternalEditor
- [ ] Autrecontroller panelWillClose
- [ ] Matrixcontroller panelWillClose
- [ ] EncodingSupport setupForEncoding
- [ ] MacroEditor.m
- [ ] ... many more
- [ ] Plan for transition
- [ ] Pick a tool / tool chain for the semi-automatic
localization process
- [ ] Start with MainMenu.nib (it should be relatively
easy to start with)
- [ ] get feedback from Dick & translators
- [ ] if successful, proceed with the other .nib files.
We will ask translators to translate from
scratch, though they can copy text from the old
localizations
- [ ] TSDocument
- [ ] MacroEditor
- [ ] matrixpanel
- [ ] completionpanel
- [ ] FindPanel (?)
- [ ] Preferences -> but here it might be better to
first redesign it from scratch!
- [ ] Future (incremental) updates of the localization
then would be easy. So would adding of new dialog
elements etc.
- [ ] Preference Dialog
- [ ] Overhaul the whole thing. It could look a lot better,
and be cleaner
- [ ] Make use of 'Bindings', for many settings we might
not even need any code
- [ ] Do not use the ugly NSBox borders (switch to type
"None"?)
- [ ] Use bold headers on the NSBox
- [ ] Maybe a vertical line to seperate the left/right
halves of the dialog
- [ ] Make the prefs dialog bigger (esp. wider), including
the text items: This reduces the amount of work that
has to be done to localize it (many lanuages need
more space than the english version of a given text)
- [ ] Add more settings to the dialog
- [ ] ... for syntax coloring (and while doing that,
change the NSUserDefault entries we use for
colors to something better)
- [ ] On the "Misc" pane, change the various radio buttons
to popup menus, which are each in its own row
- [ ] Help / Documentation
- [ ] Fancy help navigation menu (see helpmenu.psd)
currently isn't usable because it hard codes text.
However, using CSS, it should be possible to use it
anyway
- [ ] We only have to show the TeXShop icon, with
centered bold text "TeXShop Help" below it on the
left side;
- [ ] on the right side, the curved menu appears, with
text next to it, which we offset/position using
CSS.
- [ ] Make sure to update the URL in here, too
- [ ] tidy the Help HTML
- [ ] Website
- [ ] Update the 'About TeXShop' page -- "TeX previewer for Mac
OS " is hardly an appropriate description these days :-)
- [ ] Broken link to iTeXMac. Correct one:
http://itexmac.sourceforge.net/
- [ ] Misc
- [ ] New syntax coloring code disables printing colored
sources. Is this a problem for anybody? If so, we can try
to re-add this capability
- [ ] Shouldn't we use ~/Library/Application Support/TeXShop
instead of ~/Library/TeXShop ?
- [ ] Probably not worth all the work required to change it
- [ ] Why is there a distinction between "--applescript direct"
and "--applescript" ?
- [ ] Write a syntax forma guideline, which specifies the
formatting rules we use...
- [ ] latexmk support? alternatively, implement that
functionality on our own
- [ ] http://semantics-online.org/geek/2004/07/latexmk_and_t
exshop_automagic_pdfpreview_of_latex_documents
- [ ] http://www.phys.psu.edu/~collins/software/latexmk-jcc/
- [ ] Why is 'RefreshTimeKey' a config key / user
configurable???
- [ ] Regressions
- [ ] Splitview mode: Pasting something in one split view
doesn't cause the other to be updated/redrawn!
