Could someone help me implement a basic customImageRenders

Im going off the example in the docs and took their example and just stripped out the part looking for an ID along with a classname.

The original example didn't seem to play well with null-safety so I added some ?

ImageSourceMatcher classMatcher({String? classToMatch}) => (attributes, element) =>
attributes["class"] != null && attributes["id"] != null &&
    (attributes["class"]!.contains(classToMatch!));

Future<ImageRender> classRender({String? classToMatch}) async => (context, attributes, element) {
  if (attributes["class"] != null && attributes["class"]!.contains(classToMatch)) {
    return Image.asset(attributes["src"] ?? "about:blank");
  } else {
    return Image.network(
      attributes["src"] ?? "about:blank",
      semanticLabel: attributes["longdesc"] ?? "",
      width: attributes["width"],
      height: attributes["height"],
      color: context.style.color,
      frameBuilder: (ctx, child, frame, _) {
        if (frame == null) {
          return Text(attributes["alt"] ?? "", style: context.style.generateTextStyle());
        }
        return child;

    );

Then I add
the following as per the example

        customImageRenders: {
            classMatcher(classToMatch: "smilie"): classRender(classToMatch: "smilie")
        },

But my IDE gives me the following error

 Error: A value of type 'Future<Widget? Function(RenderContext, Map<String, String>, Element?)>' can't be assigned to a variable of type 'Widget? Function(RenderContext, Map<String, String>, Element?)'.

Anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?

You are using Future<ImageRender> as the function type, but it should not be a Future (and you don't need it to be), so just make it an ImageRender.
