Dry Run Feature

Is it possible to add a feature to disable the extruder/filament during a print to diagnose mechanical issues with a printer? I have an X1C that is presenting with ticking/grinding noises and need to identify root cause. Not able to identify from a cold state manually moving the gantry around so I figured being able to create test models to exercise the xyz functionality under heat soak from the print bed would make this a lot easier to figure out. Any thoughts on how to do this?
