SD2IEC does more than just poor emulation of the 1541. It allows commodore computers to use a filesystem that supports sub-directories, and some c64 programs I use (SID-Wizard, namely) can take advantage of having none of the file limits that you'd have with disk images. Having a folder somewhere on the mister SD card that can serve as the root for a simulated SD2IEC device can be very useful.
Although I do agree that this use case is incredibly niche.
It would be great to have (e|si)mulation of IDE64 device, and SD2IEC. As both are open source, this could be feasible.
