Terminal emulators on Linux and OSX allow setting colors for the foreground and background independently of the other colors in the palette. This is used, for example, in w0ng's hybrid theme for vim to have an extra black where the background black is the default and color number 0 is the current line highlight.

What? Xterm256 is supported for years.

I'm not talking about the 256 color palette. I mean when you assign the 16 color palette, there's a dropdown that lets you choose which of the 16 to use as the foreground color and which to use as the background. I'm saying that I'd like to see those changed to color selectors.

Absolutely the same in ConEmu: Text and Back. What's the problem?

Right, but those values can only be chosen from one of the 16 colors that I set. I should have changed the colors in the screenshots to demonstrate better, but you can see in the gnome-terminal settings screenshot that the text color is not a color that exists in the palette below it.

Due to the limitations of conhost it's not possible at the moment. Only "paletted" text color is supported.
Background color you may try to change on the Background page, like "Ubuntu" predefined color scheme dies.

BTW, anyone may choose arbitrary color for background.

The text color is upon console application, e.g. you may configure your prompt. Related to gh-227.
