emailit

A mass spammer for computer science manchester

How to emailit

(Note that this is pretty specific to sending a Man-UP related email)

On a CS machine source the Man-UP dotfiles

Simply enter

source /home/S08/suttonp8/man-up

Now it is advisable that you add the following line to your .my_bashrc.linux

source man-up

This does the same as the previous command (sort of) and will allow you to get all the super cool Man-UP stuff.

Put the body of the email in a text file in your cs home directory

  • Preferably write the email in markdown

Upload the image to man-up.appspot.com

  • Go to http://man-up.appspot.com and click 'log in/register' in the top right.

  • Once you have logged in you should now see an 'admin' button in the top right corner, if you cannot you need to be made an admin, email me at [email protected] and I can sort this out.

  • Clicking the admin button will take you to the admin page where you can create a news post, fill it with the same content you will put in the body of the email.

  • On this page you can upload the image and use the url for the email.

  • You can get the url of the image by viewing the news post (on the homepage) and copying the image url.

Create a Facebook event on the facebook group

  • (leave a message on there if you need to become an admin).

  • At the time of writing the create event button is the cog icon in the right corner of the group page.

  • Upload the image as the event image and put the body of the email in as the details.

  • Once you have created the event copy the event id, which is the big number in the url after "event/" and before the final "/", e.g., 245828098826625

Send a test email

The basic outline

emailit -f [FACEBOOK_EVENT_ID] -i [IMAGE_URL] -l [LINK_TO_FACEBOOK_EVENT] \
[recipient] [your_cs_username] "[SUBJECT LINE]" [EMAIL_BODY_FILE]

You probably want to test it first so run something like

emailit -f 245828098826625 -i \
http://man-up.appspot.com/img?img_id=agZtYW4tdXByDQsSBUltYWdlGPrGBQw -l \
http://www.facebook.com/events/245828098826625 [YOUR_CS_USERNAME] \
[YOUR_CS_USERNAME] "[Man-UP] The Punisher getting you out of bed and into \
Kilburn" ~/email-body.txt

And then check it all works ok

By sourcing /home/S08/suttonp8/man-up you will now have the environmental variable $list_nerds which is the mailing list for Man-UP.

BEWARE, IT IS BEYOND POWERFUL, DON'T BE THAT PERSON WHO HAS TO SEND THE SPAM MAIL MORE THAN ONCE.

So, as an example of its use:

emailit -f 245828098826625 -i \
http://man-up.appspot.com/img?img_id=agZtYW4tdXByDQsSBUltYWdlGPrGBQw -l \
http://www.facebook.com/events/245828098826625 @$lists_nerds henninl8 \
"[Man-UP] The Punisher getting you out of bed and into Kilburn" \
~/email-body.txt

Anymore queries ask [email protected] or [email protected]. Or both.
