To install CAMFR on a Windows platform, it's easiest to use the binary
installers for the following packages:
- Python 2.6 from http://www.python.org
- NumPy and SciPy from http://www.scipy.org
- matplotlib from http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/
- CAMFR itself
You can also compile CAMFR from sources, which is useful if you e.g. want to
link with a LAPACK library which is specifically optimised for your system,
or if you want to develop on a Windows machine.
As compiler, we recommend Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2008, as this is the
same version that was used to compile Python 2.6. The express version is
freely available from http://www.microsoft.com/Express/ .
Other versions (e.g. Visual Studio .NET 2005) use different run-time
libraries which can cause incompatibilities.
First, install the build tool scons (> 1.2.0) )from http://www.scons.org,
as well as the versioning control tool bzr from http://bazaar-vcs.org/.
Then, save yourself a lot of trouble and copy a directory over from a fellow
developper.
If that's not possible, you'll have to go through a number of steps to install
all the libraries, which we'll discuss now.
* Download the Boost library. There are binary installers availble from
http://www.boostpro.com/products/free
and the bjam executable
from
http:\\www.boost.org. You don't need to install the whole library, just
Boost.Python, so you can cd to
http://www.boostpro.com/products/free
C:\Program Files\boost_1_38_0\boost_1_38_0\libs\python\build
and do
bjam.exe toolstet=msvc release
* Download Blitz from http://www.oonumerics.org/blitz/. There is a
Blitz-VS.NET.zip in the top level directory blitz-0.9. Unzip its contents to
blitz-0.9, not to blitz-0.9/Blitz-VS.NET. Open the file Blitz-Library.sln.
First, make sure the drop-down box in the toolbar says 'release' rather than
'debug'. Secondly, you need to make sure the library uses the multithreaded
run time. Select 'blitz' from the target window on the right which says
Solution 'Blitz-Library', then go to Project:Properties:C/C++:Code Generation
and select Runtime Library: Multithreaded DLL. Then do Build:Build Blitz to
create the library.
* Copy machine_cfg.py.MSVC to machine_cfg.py and edit if needed.
* Visual Studio does not come with a Fortran compiler, so we'll use the GNU
Fortran compiler for that. Install MinGW from http://www.mingw.org, e.g.
version 5.0.2 from the 'Proposed' branch, which avoids having to download
multiple separate packages. Create a Fortran directory, and dump all the
*.f files from the camfr source there (in math/bessel/slatec and
math/calculus/polyroot). Also copy the BLAS and LAPACK files from their
respective SRC directories from the lapack source you can download from
http://www.netlib.org/lapack/.
Then do
g77 -O3 -c *.f
ar -cr fortran.lib *.o
ranlib fortran.lib
Copy C:\MinGW\lib\libg2c.a to fortran\g2c.lib (i.e. renaming it in the
process) as well as C:\MinGW\lib\gcc\mingw32\3.4.4\libgcc.a to fortran\gcc.lib
* Download the latest CAMFR source code from the repository at Launchpad:
Go into a directory C:\Program Files\source\camfr, and do
bzr branch lp:camfr
(Currently, you can still use SVN from the Sourceforge site as well.)
* Now open a Visual Studio command line, go to the camfr directory and type
python setup.py install to install CAMFR, or python setup.py bdist_wininst to
create a binary installer.
