The difference between the ASCII special characters is good to note.

• Question mark, Exclamation mark, and full-stop/period are used to end a sentence (and is expected to the only sentence ending)
• Comma, Colon, Semi-colon, and hyphens are used to chop up a sentence
• Brackets ()[]{} and quotes `'"`` are used to wrap texts and items around
• Direction keys <> are used to wrap text OR indicate quantity difference and direction
• Bars /|\ is used for URLs and dividing words
• @, # and $ are common for people in social media to highlight keywords and links/emails/handles
• % and & has specific linguistic purposes
• ~_+=^ are also included

A major counter to this problem is bullet point lists (or another abnormal text formatting) and ASCII art.
