.TH SHOWEM 1 "Version 1.0.3: August 2017"
.SH NAME
showem \- monitor the progress of a parallel \fBemerge\fR(1)
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B showem
[\fIoptions\fR]
.SH DESCRIPTION
.B showem
is a very simple utility script, which allows you to monitor the progress of
a parallel \fBemerge\fR(1).
When invoked, it shows a split screen display, which updates once a second (or as otherwise specified by the \fB--wait-seconds\fR option).
The top part shows the tail of the current \fBPortage\fR(5) download log,
and the lower part shows the tail of the most recent \fBPortage\fR(5)
build log.
The download log display is cleared after 1 minute's inactivity; however, the
build log is retained (even if stale) - this allows you to quickly see
where a build has failed.
The path of the build log is displayed in the title bar of the window. If the
window is resized, the display is adapted automatically to fit; however, a
minimum size of 80 columns and 24 rows is required.
Exit \fBshowem\fR using \fBCtrl-c\fR, when done.
.SH OPTIONS
.TP
.BR \-h ", " \-\-help
Displays a short help screen, and exits.
.TP
.BR \-s ", " \-\-wait\-seconds\=S
Specifies the number of seconds, S, to pause between screen refreshes.
The default is 1.
.TP
.BR \-V ", " \-\-version
Displays the version number of \fBshowem\fR, and exits.
.SH COMPATIBILITY
Although \fBshowem\fR uses \fBtput\fR(1) to access the number of columns and rows,
and to set colours, it does use an \fBxterm\fR(1) escape sequence to change
the window title.
It should work under most modern terminal emulators, including Gnome's.
.SH EXIT STATUS
The exit status is 1 if an error occurred, and 0 otherwise.
.SH NOTES
By default, \fBPortage\fR(5) has the 'parallel-fetch' feature turned on - this means it can begin fetching tarballs for packages whose build hasn't started yet. These files are what get displayed in the \fI/var/log/emerge-fetch.log\fR file, and shown in the top 'pane' of \fBshowem\fR. However, it is entirely possible that one or more running \fBemerge\fR(1) processes will \fIalso\fR be downloading files, in which case you may see file download information in the bottom 'pane' of \fBshowem\fR as well.
