Brawler 64 wireless connects but wont register inputs.

The screen progresses as though the connection was made but it won't register any input or show the controller symbol/battery level. Not sure if the controller itself isn't supported or not but I have noticed others talking about their third party controllers being unresponsive and I was just wondering if I should be trying an older build.
