TimeoutError when connecting to ESGF for automatic download

Hi there,

I have previously downloaded data from ESGF via ESMValTool, but for over a week now, I always get a 'Operation timed out' error. In the log file, I see that the ESGF configuration is loaded as usual from my esgf-pyclient.yml file where I have specified hostname (esgf-data.dkrz.de), username and password. But then the connection is timed out. Has anyone experienced the same and or some advice for me what I can do to make it run again?

Logging in to ESGF is no longer needed and ESGF is taking the OpenID servers offline. You can remove the logon section from your esgf-pyclient.yml configuration file. See also ESMValGroup/ESMValCore#2491. In the future, I would recommend sending an email to the ESGF support mailinglist if you have issues connecting to or downloading from ESGF servers, as you're much more likely to get a quick response there.

another possibility is the node is temporarily down, you can check that by pinging it. and if it's up, then you should get a decent 0% packet loss packet transfer eg:
