Reanalysis data in ESMValTool?

Hi @ESMValGroup/esmvaltool-coreteam and others,

In a couple weeks, I'm going to be attending a Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) workshop on the future of marine reanalysis data: http://marine.copernicus.eu/ (Maybe I'll see some of you there?)

My role is present the needs of the CMIP marine BGC analysis community, but I'm keen to add a wider perspective from ESMValTool developers and users. Could you please let me know:

• What reanalysis datasets are you currently using and for what?
• What are the strengths and gaps in current reanalysis data?
• In an ideal world, what do we want from upcoming historical re-analyses?

Like I said, my focus in marine reanalysis data, but I'm keen to hear about other datasets.

@ledm Great, thanks for letting us know! We actually think about getting marine reanalysis data into ESMValTool (starting with ORAS5) but this is still at the very beginning. Else I currently use CRU, ERA5, MERRA2, NCEP-NCAR-R1 (droughts: precipitation and variables related to potential evapotranspiration). For ERA5 I don't like the gap between hourly and monthly data, would be good to have also daily (without the need to download hourly and calculate daily).
Ideal would be, if new data would be downloaded and available on the HPCs automatically/ centrally.

Thanks - that's really helpful! What do you mean about getting marine reanalysis data into ESMValTool? Do you mean formatting it to look like Obs4MIPs?

Writing a cmorizer or a fix/on-the-flight cmorizer like for ERA5

We are in active discussions with NASA about providing all of the major atmospheric (and possibly ocean) reanalyses through the GES-DISC (Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center). They would use ESMValTool to do the cmorization and the processed data would be stored at NASA GSFC. This is a replacement and update of the current CREATE (https://doi.org/10.1175/BAMS-D-17-0174.1) service.

Hey @ledm,
we do have quite a variety of atmospheric reanalyses data available for ESMValTool. We at DLR (mainly @axel-lauer, @LisaBock and myself) are working on a comparison of cloud parameters from the main current main reanalyses (like ERA5, MERRA2, JRA-55, etc.) and their predecessors within the S-RIP project phase 2.
We have also thought about adding one (or more) cmorizer(s) for chemical reanalyses datasets (like CAMS) to ESMValTool to support more diagnostics in the atmospheric chemistry field.
