The symlink from gamescope-session.desktop to gamescope-session-steam.desktop creates an additional item in the SDDM sessions dropdown, which I think is very confusing.

I would suggest dropping the symlink.

When I tested this with GDM there was no additional entries. I guess SDDM works differently. We need the symlink for backwards compatibility.

I see duplicate entries with LightDM, too.
