1. What is PiHole?

Bogdan Tudorache edited this page May 5, 2022 · 9 revisions

As per Wikipedia: Pi-hole is a Linux network-level advertisement and Internet tracker blocking application which acts as a DNS sinkhole and optionally a DHCP server, intended for use on a private network. It is designed for low-power embedded devices with network capability, such as the Raspberry Pi, but supports any Linux machines.

I have never seen a more complete and accurate description in my life!

But what should we take from it?

  1. It's only for Linux distros

  2. It's a network-level ad & tracker blocker

  3. Designed for low power devices

  4. This is not mentioned but I would even call it an: extremely environmentally friendly solution for minimising energy consumption across the internet infrastructure ⚡️🛟*

  • How come you might ask?

    Well in my case it's pretty simple, it stops around 15% of my internet traffic from ever leaving my home

    -> 15% less connections

    -> 15% less packets downstream.

Here's a sneak preview on how the web interface looks like:

And here's a photo of the culprit in action:

Quite ferocious I might add ⚠️☣️☢️
