Genericons is an old project, built for a simpler time. It still exists here for back compatibility, and is open to PRs.

However you might want to consider Genericons Neue, a refreshed and modernized version of Genericons. It's visually more coherent, it's much slimmer with only the most necessary icons, and it's built using npm.

Or if you need logos or icons for your favorite social network, Social Logos, which probably has the one you need, and is open to suggestions.

Genericons Neue and Social Logos are where the bulk of energy will be spent going forward.

How to do we install Genericons Neue icons on a WordPress 4.6.1 site that runs in Windows? It appears that Windows installation instructions are not present on the landing page for this project...

@blachawk Can you clarify a little bit? Do you mean the instructions for using Genericons Neue in your theme are missing? I'll make a note to add that.

Edit: ticket to follow: Automattic/genericons-neue#7

I would like to add the svg-min icons from this package to wordPress 4.6.1 and test them out on any post or page. Simply requesting for instructions on getting your icons to work in WordPress, for any page, or post. That's all. Thanks!

WordPress doesn't allow direct SVG upload, so unless you force WordPress to accept that, there's no super easy way to use the icons piecemeal.

The set was initially built to be used by WordPress themes and in CSS, which I'll write some instructions for. But there are also plugins like Genericon'd, and perhaps if we super kindly ask @Ipstenu, maybe the "Neue" set will be added as an option perhaps?

Thank you so much for the clarity on that! Much appreciated.

Yes :) I'll be rebuilding Genericon'd to have both!

I had it built out as a Proof of Concept for the revamp, but as soon as I get the time, I'll do this.

https://github.com/Ipstenu/genericond/tree/REL_4.0.0 is in BETA.

I'm messing around a lot right now with fallbacks on saving (to make sure you never end up in a state where you have nothing active...), but the code works.

@jebu1104 - This wouldn't be the place for support of either Genericons (which doesn't have any URL settings) or the Genericon'd plugin (which ... doesn't save a URL for the icons either since it uses your home/siteURL). Do a search/replace of your DB. If you don't know how, you'll need to ask for help in wordpress.org/support 😄
