tech trees usually don't start with one node, so we probably don't want to show the root node.

Make this tied to a variable/config option, letting a developer decide whether he/she want to show it.

By extension, is it possible to add a property to non-root nodes that apply as sort of "hide" to them?

  1. This could produce a multipart research tree, where there are multiple "roots", but all handled as one tree object See this image for an example. Where did the University come from?
  2. Also useful, this would be the equivalent of adding a dummy node, only to have it hidden. This would be useful when using tiers to group research based on game/match progression, or using something akin to Age of Empires' "Age" system.

Ah, I hadn't thought of that! You're absolutely right that a more general "dummy node" would be very useful!
